UK: S&N OFFERS CASH BACK SERVICE IN PUBS
Article Abstract:
Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) customers at 80% of its 2,654 public houses in the UK will be able to obtain cash back free when spending GB[pound] 2 or more, it was announced on 8 March 2000. The UK's top public house operator, which operates the Rat & Parrot, Bar 38 and Chef and Brewer brands, revealed that since launching the service in 1988 in 500 pubs, it had proved very popular with customers. The move is regarded as a response to the decision by certain leading banks to impose a charge on cash machine users. Nationwide Building Society is an advocate of free banking and its spokesman, Alan Oliver, noted that surcharging might radically alter the way cash is withdrawn by customers.

UK: EGG INTRODUCES VIRTUAL WALLET
Article Abstract:
Customers in the UK will soon be able to purchase goods via the Internet without the need of a credit card. The system, scheduled to be launched by the Internet bank Egg in October 2000, is possible because of what Egg has branded the "virtual wallet". Customers are able to download funds from their cash or credit card accounts and buy small items over the Internet or via mobile phones. The technology, which has been developed by EarthPort, also reduces the risks associated with carrying real money as well as eliminating fears regarding the transmission of credit card details.
